The workshops in New England are as follows (details of each level are below):

ATB 1 – Thursday and Friday, June 28  & 29, 2012.

ATB Kindergarten -  Saturday, 30th of June

ATB 2 – Sunday through Tuesday, July 1-3, 2012.

ATB 3 - Thursday through Saturday, July 5-7, 2012.

ATB 5 – Monday through Thursday, July 9-12, 2012.

*Note: ATB 1 must be taken before ATB 2, ATB 2  before ATB 3, and ATB 3 before

ATB 5.

ATB 1 is a prerequisite for the Kindergarten workshop.

All of these workshops will be in or near Walpole, NH. 30 min from both Keene, NH and Brattleboro, VT.

The ATB workshops require consistent concentration and can be emotionally or physically demanding. Neither you nor the group will get the full value from the experience if  you can not be wholly present for every session. If you have major responsibilities  during this time we suggest you  think carefully about whether you can give the workshops your full attention. ATB Levels

ATB I
Plates

Provides a basic orientation to Awareness through the Body and is a prerequisite for all more advanced workshops. The topics include:

  • Attention and concentration—directing and focusing attention, and increasing the length and depth of concentration
  • Exploration of the different planes of the being
  • Breathing—developing awareness of the breath and the effects of breathing
  • Relaxation—enhancing the ability to relax, physically, emotionally, and mentally
  • Plate work—experiencing inner and outer space, and being present in both simultaneously


ATB II

Deepens and integrates the basics of ATB introduced in ATB I and adds:

  • Sensory awareness
  • Emotional exploration
  • Form exploration
  • Collective aims in group dynamics

Awareness of how the physical structure develops control over contraction and relaxation in the body


ATB III

Explores the principles of ATB and their practical application including how to lead an ATB session, develop a sequential program, and address the needs of specific children and specific groups.  Activities include:

  • Moving over, under, and around objects in structured settings
  • Throwing and catching bamboo sticks to develop group cohesion, peripheral vision and a sense of rhythm
  • Balancing plates to deepen the simultaneous experience of inner and outer space
  • Working with the elements


ATB V

  • Further explores the basic themes of ATB helping the participant to obtain a deeper perception of what ATB is.
  • We look at Evolution as the evolution of consciousness. We approach it from the different parts of our being: Rediscovering evolutionary movements present in our body, sensing the particular energy and emotion of each evolutionary step, and observing how the mind evolves through the different stages.
  • The 5 Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether. Participants explore the presence of these Elements in them and in the world around. They become aware of the interaction of these Elements in the being and of how one can use them to bring greater harmony into oneself.


Kindergaten

We will explore how Awareness through the Body is implemented with kindergarten age children through lively activities and games that give the adult an embodied understanding of ATB so they can help the children contact an inner consciousness. Objectives for the children include:

  • Listening for meaning
  • Self control
  • Focus and capacity for being present
  • Alertness of the senses
  • Freedom and fluidity of movement
  • Social skills
  • Respectful and sensitive body contact with peers
  • A healthy self image
  • Trust
  • Subjective memories for relaxation and tonicity

The Instructors

Aloka

Aloka Born in Catalonia, Spain in 1951. In 1972 moved to India to live in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram where she teached contemporary dance to adults and to the children of the Ashram school. During these years she studied and practiced Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, and breathing therapy. Since 1991 she is living in Auroville where she teached dance and, with Joan, created and implemented the program Awareness Through the Body for the children in the Auroville Schools. Since 2003 she has been studying water body work and deepening the practice of Tai Chi. Presently she is a water body worker practitioner and offers workshops on Awareness Through the Body for teachers and other adults in Auroville, Europe and the U.S.

Suryamayi

Suryamayi was born and raised in Auroville, India, an international community devoted to the ideal of human unity and conscious evolution. At 6 years old, she was among ATB founders’ Aloka Marti and Joan Sala’s first students, has trained with them consistently throughout her life, and is now a certified ATB practitioner who regularly leads classes and workshops for both children and adults. Suryamayi also teaches hatha yoga, Anusara Yoga founder John Friend being her primary teacher. Suryamayi has included several Therapy Trainings in her studies with John Friend, as well as several hundred hours of therapeutic bodywork on Maui, where she currently lives and owns a private studio with her husband Tony.
